2020 Won’t Stop Heroes from Giving Back at the Eighth Annual Turkey & a $20

One80 Place Retooling Annual Holiday Drive for the COVID Era

CHARLESTON, SC – If you have to wear a mask, might as well be a hero. One80 Place is inviting community heroes to swing by One80 Place for its eighth annual Turkey and a $20 donation drive on Tuesday, November 24, 2020.

Now a tradition in the region, One80 Place is making a slight modification to its ask this year, reflecting the changes in its clients’ needs.  Individuals, businesses, and organizations are being asked to collect and drop off monetary contributions, grocery gift cards, as well as turkeys and hams. Every dollar collected will go directly to support the community kitchen, which continues to produce meals to support shelter clients and some off-site locations.

Due to Covid-19, One80 Place has been working harder than ever to get clients housed and making sure they stay housed. To date, the organization is serving 23% more individuals than this time last year. With so many clients struggling to find work, the organization is having to help a lot more people with groceries for example. This is why, this year, in lieu of donating a turkey, One80 Place is asking for $20 grocery gift cards on top of monetary contributions.

Donating is easy; just visit the shelter on Tuesday, November 24 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., roll down your window and donate your monetary contribution and grocery gift card.

“Our regulars know that Turkey and a $20 was the original socially distanced fundraiser,” says Marco Corona, Chief Development Officer of One80 Place. “Every year, we’re amazed at how the community answers our call for help, and we know they will come through for us again this Turkey and a $20.”

This year the organizers hope to raise $30,000 and 300 $20 grocery gift cards.

Turkey and a $20 contributors can expect to enjoy a smooth and safe drop-off service, thanks to socially distant volunteers who will be onsite taking donations using a drive-thru style. For those that cannot come by on November 24, community members can pledge their support by buying a virtual turkey online at one80place.org starting November 1st.
