Beginning Again

You provide a chance to begin again.

A Veteran of the Air Force, John spent his time after retirement traveling the world and buying and selling businesses. In 2015, he came back out of retirement and rejoined the workforce as a Product Specialist for a well-known automobile company.

As a result of an on-the-job injury, John had no choice but to work fewer and fewer hours and inevitably had to leave his job. He took another job working a couple of days a week as a chef, but was quickly running out of money. He was ultimately evicted and found himself living out of his car.

He never thought he would be homeless at 77 years old.

I can’t say enough good things. Without One80 Place, I don’t know if I would even be around. I was in a very desperate situation.  I just didn’t have options and didn’t know these services existed. My case managers helped guide me through this thing and made it possible for me to be on my own. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

-John

After reaching out to the VA, he was connected with One80 Place. John stayed at the shelter and worked diligently with his case manager. After just two months, John moved into his own apartment. Looking forward, he says, “my goal is to get completely out of debt and on my own again, just as I had been for 60 years of my life.” He also has plans to repay One80 Place in any way that he can through fundraising and advocating for programs. “This is an absolutely amazing group of people that work very hard to help out Veterans."
