Family Center Now Serving More Families and Women
One80 Place celebrated the renovation of its Family Center on Friday, Feb 10.
As families continue to be a significant percentage of the homeless population in our community (25% of One80 Place’s guests are families), SCE&G and One80 Place have partnered to address this critical need. Through a grant of $75,000 from SCE&G, as well as a $15,000 grant from Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, One80 Place’s Family Center underwent a renovation to increase the center’s capacity by 55% from 40 beds to 62 beds. Rush Dixon Architect, LLC and Chastain Construction designed and developed the project.
On Friday, February 10, SCE&G staff, members of Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church and other key supporters gathered at One80 Place’s Family Center to celebrate the completion of this renovation. Among the speakers at the event was Mayor John Tecklenburg, who reemphasized the importance of addressing family homelessness in Charleston and the Lowcountry region. Pending City approval, One80 Place will start moving in women and families from its waiting list as early February 15. Anyone in need of shelter can call the Housing Crisis Line at (843) 737-8357.
“Family homelessness continues to grow in our community. The creation of additional beds is just one step in a much-needed community-wide approach to ending homelessness,” said Scott Adams, Board Chair of One80 Place. “SCE&G has been a vital partner in our efforts to end homelessness for families. They understand the impact homelessness can have on children and how important it is to lessen that impact.”
"Just as the safety and well-being of our customers and our communities is a top priority for SCE&G, so is the commitment of One80 Place to serve the needs of homeless individuals, families and veterans,” said Keller Kissam, SCE&G's president of retail operations. "That's why we're so proud to continue to work side by side with One80 Place to help care for our neighbors in need and help end the cycle of homelessness in our communities."
