One80 Place Celebrates 11th Annual Turkey and a $20 Drive
CHARLESTON, SC – One80 Place will host its 11th annual Turkey and a $20 donation drive on Tuesday, November 21st.
In honor of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, One80 Place is setting the tone for the holiday season with a festive experience and an opportunity for families to give thanks by giving back to their neighbors in need. The organization is asking for monetary donations, proteins (ham and turkey), and grocery store gift cards to help in the mission to end homelessness for those struggling in our community.
According to the most recent South Carolina State of Homelessness report (2022), there are approximately 324 individuals in the Lowcountry grappling with homelessness, hunger, and food insecurity on any given night. For many One80 Place clients, ending their homelessness often begins by addressing their immediate concern of hunger through the One80 Place Community Kitchen.
Annually, funds are raised to support the community kitchen and food rescue program through this signature event, Turkey and a $20. Every dollar collected will go directly to support the community kitchen and food rescue program by providing 32,000 meals this holiday season and fueling their clients housing plans.
“We are proud that we served over 90,000 meals last year out of our community kitchen and rescued over 158,000 pounds of food,” says Lara LeRoy, Chief Development Officer of One80 Place. “The community’s generosity is critical to reaching our goal of $75,000 which will provide thousands of meals over the course of the year.”
Now a tradition in the region, Turkey and a $20 has proven to be a day of philanthropy, friendship, and giving thanks by giving back.
To participate, just visit One80 Place at 35 Walnut Street on Tuesday, November 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., roll down your window and donate your monetary contribution, gift cards, and/or your turkey. Contributors will also have the chance to snap car-side selfies with local personalities, newscasters, and sport mascots. For those that cannot come by on November 21, support can still be provided by texting “TURKEY” to 345345 or creating your own peer-to-peer fundraiser at one80place.org/donateturkey.
