What is Turkey and a $20? One80 Place’s annual Turkey and a $20 is a fun and festive kickoff to the holiday season. Every year before Thanksgiving, we ask members of the community to donate turkeys and cash donations.
What is the goal of the event? 400 turkeys, $30,000 in community support to unlock a $20,000 match from some generous donors and Mercedes Benz Vans.
Who is invited? We’re inviting the entire community to participate.
When is the event? Tuesday, 11/20 from 8 AM to 4 PM. We’ll have on-air personalities and mascots celebrating from 10 AM to 2 PM.
Where is the event? At One80 Place, located at 35 Walnut St, Charleston, SC 29403.
What if I can’t make it on Tuesday? If you can’t make it down or don’t have cash on hand that day, you can make your donation online by going to our website, one80place.org or our Facebook page, facebook.com/Charlestonhomeless.
What will One80 Place do with the turkeys and cash raised? The turkeys go in our freezer and will help fill the bellies of our shelter guests and those who are hungry in our community for the next year. We serve over 165,000 meals each year. The funds will help rehouse nearly 1,000 individuals, and provide our guests supportive services such as health care, legal services, case management, employment training and placement, housing services and Veterans services.
How successful was last year’s Turkey and a $20? Last year we raised $40,000 and collected 520 turkeys. The turkeys contributed to 1,400 meals throughout the year, and the money raised helped us with our supportive services, ultimately housing 980 individuals.
PEOPLE ENDED OR PREVENTED THEIR HOMELESSNESS
The solution to homelessness is always a home, which is why our staff work with clients to get them re-housed as quickly as possible.
Every year, more than 175,000 meals are served to shelter guests and those who are hungry in our community.
Maintaining housing requires income. To help clients get a job, One80 Place provides employment training and access to jobs.
Health issues are both a cause and a result of being homeless. Our onsite health clinic makes it easier to address these concerns right away.
Many times, the path to a new home requires a lawyer. Staff attorneys work with clients to navigate complex documents and procedures standing in the way of housing.
One80 Place provides Veteran services to both men and women who have served, or live with a spouse who has served, in the military.
