One80 Place culinary graduate earns a dish on the menu at Juliet

Kirby Campbell, 56, came to Charleston from upstate New York after a breakup. He landed here without a job or a home and soon found himself at One80 Place, the homeless shelter.

He was grateful they had a bed for him and space in the culinary training program with Angie DuPree.

Campbell says he has been in the food industry for 40 years mostly as a bartender and banquet server, but the program took the short year and a half he worked as a line cook and built on that.

“One80 is unlike any shelter I’ve ever seen,'' he says. "Restaurants like Magnolia and Juliet work with them in the culinary program. There's no reason for you not to succeed unless you don’t care and don’t want to.”
