CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Out with the old and in with the new at One80 Place, the non-profit working to prevent and end homelessness in the Lowcountry.
Thursday was a big step towards bigger and better things. One80 Place’s longtime shelter plans to be bulldozed, making way for a new six-story apartment building on Meeting Street. “The community is so excited, they have embraced this project from day one,” said Stacey Denaux, CEO of One80 Place.
Workers said the mixed-use space will bring a revolutionary feel with retail and office space, many income levels, and homeless shelters.
”Everybody talks about mixed-use buildings because it reduces traffic,” said Richard Gowe with LS3P Architect. “If you have everything on one site it makes it more efficient.”
One80 Place said its new facility will feature 70 affordable housing units. Leaders want this build to be the start of something new for those experiencing homelessness. They're confident the new homes will bring the homeless a sense of security.
“This community supports people in need, so this is a big deal and a great sense of relief to see such a big milestone,” Denaux said. “Once we get this one built, we’ll see what happens next. "
The building being demolished now hasn’t been used for years. The new family shelter and eating area are expected to be built in the next 14-16 months. Leaders hope the 70 apartments will be finished in the next two years.
